Roof shingle coatings have been around for years, but they are now becoming popular because they are cheaper than other coatings and offer protection against moisture and pests.
The new material, which is a blend of copper and zinc, has been gaining popularity due to its resistance to damage from moisture.
The coatings are made by a company called Copper and Steel Coatings.
“They are just fantastic,” said Rick Ritter, owner of Ritter Roofing in Long Beach, California.
“You can buy this stuff in bulk and you can get it on a day-to-day basis for about $15 to $20 a square foot.”
You can find copper and steel shingling coatings in the yard or at home depot, and the companies are starting to offer their products at retail.
They are priced to suit a variety of budget-minded homeowners, but the best price for the copper shingled roofing that you will find at a hardware store, store, or online is about $20 per square foot, Ritter said.
“I have been doing this for 20 years and have never had a problem with this material,” he said.
Copper and steel coatings can withstand up to a 10 percent moisture increase in the area they are installed.
“It’s going to be a little bit of a compromise between the cost and the protection,” Ritter added.
You can also use copper shingle coatings on existing roofs and roofs that are not designed to withstand a moisture increase.
“That is a big concern for us because if the roof doesn’t have good protection, it could fall down,” Riter said.
